Off to the flea market: These are the things you should be on the lookout for

Old hats rediscovered: We asked experts what surprising (and affordable!) items you should look for the next time you visit a flea market.

Off to the flea market Look for these things

For newcomers to the world of bargain and rarity hunters, a visit to a flea market quickly becomes an endurance test that floods all the senses. So many impressions, so many buying stimuli, so many people carrying bags of stuff away - probably a rock concert visit is much more relaxing than a few hours at the flea market. We all know the outcome: you're so overwhelmed by all the buying options that you either take home nothing at all, or the pieces that immediately catch your eye (usually those are the overpriced ones).

So here comes a new plan for your next flea market visit: stay away from the supposed box office hits (aka midcentury rarities) and focus on real vintage pieces. In other words, the ones you can still get for cheap because no one thinks they're cool yet. Which treasures are those? We asked a number of design industry experts what you should definitely be on the lookout for at flea markets.

Ashtrays

"Maybe it's because I've always been a bit of a rule follower and need to feed my alter ego, but I just love finding pieces that represent bad habits and then repurposing them. Smoking is bad and because most people have kicked the habit (or at least moved it outside), ashtrays are no longer in high demand. That's why you can get them at flea markets for a song.

A beautiful vintage ashtray can be wonderfully repurposed into storage for jewelry, keys, and candy, or as a tea light holder for the coffee table. For example, I have a large pink-speckled Midcentury ashtray that I use as a fruit bowl in my kitchen." - Brittney Forrister, Sales Specialist at EBTH (Everything But the House)
