The identity of the capital airport
After years of delays, the new Berlin Brandenburg Airport will open on October 31, 2020. A week earlier, the name SXF for Berlin-Schönefeld was said goodbye and the existing terminal was renamed Terminal 5. It will continue to serve as a departure and destination point for low-cost airlines.
The Berlin office Moniteurs Kommunikationsdesign was commissioned to design an identity for the new BER airport - in the form of an easy-to-read, harmonious guidance system. Typeface, color and pictograms form a unified system that guides passengers through the airport and connects the new terminals with the old one.
For the guidance system, consisting of panels, signs and screens, a dark red color was chosen to harmonize with the architecture of wood, sandstone and glass. Some panels are integrated into the architecture. The white font color stands out clearly against the background. The hierarchies are marked by hatchings that draw their inspiration from Brandenburg coniferous forests and modern buildings of Berlin. Thus, coding by bright colors is dispensed with and a homogeneous appearance is made possible. In the terminals, the letters identifying the individual zones recede into the background as hatching, while the numbers symbolizing the gates stand out in white. Pictograms with a brown background refer passengers to services, parking facilities and toilets, for example.
The typeface BER Signage was designed especially for the new airport. It contains references to typical Berlin features: The double S is represented as an ß - as on most Berlin street signs. The pictograms were also developed from the typeface. This is intended to create a "design homogeneity between the typeface and the pictograms."
The comprehensive passenger guidance system also includes touchpoints whose displays can be constantly updated so that, for example, the latest rules regarding Corona measures can be displayed. They fit into the wayfinding system.
